Share your story

I am beyond blessed that I teach a class where we are able to bring in guest speakers to share their own stories.  We have several units that allow us to bring in professionals, like a renowned Neurosurgeon (our very own McDreamy ;) and health care professionals.

We  have had a neurofeedback specialist come in and explain how neurofeedback works to help with common aliments like ADHD and anxiety.  They are from a local center.  Students were blown away by the depth of knowledge they had in matters of the brain.

One of the best parts about teaching the class is having former students who are now professionals in the workplace come out and teach our class.  We have had neonatal nurses and ER nurses come out and talk about their "Day in the life" as nurses and how very different their days are.

Posting to our community google page is one way that students get to see what they all thought of each of the guest speakers.

As we continue on to tougher topics, we are also blessed that former students come in as guest speakers to talk about their struggles and triumphs with mental illness.  We are extremely grateful that they come back each semester to share their struggles and be vulnerable to our classes and share the importance of understanding and acceptance.

Beyond that week, we enter into our sexual assault unit where we create a date rape trial that is life changing for students. More on that to come.....
Believe it or not, we have had several former students who have reached out to us as sexual assault survivors to come back and speak about their story.

After that, we move onto the drug unit where we have been blessed to have former addicts, family members of addicts, and half way house facilitators come and speak.

****In order to keep the anonymity of the speakers as best I can, I will not be sharing any specifics about who came and what they spoke about especially in cases of personal stories and hardships they faced.

As part of their grade in the class, they are to pick their favorite guest speaker and write them a thank you letter.  It is such a great part of my job that I can forward these onto our speakers who are extremely generous with their time (often taking time off of work).
